Wow - The Irish Tenors at Parker Playhouse in old Ft. Lauderdale: What an exciting night! Parker Playhouse is an old venue with just under 1200 seats and as far as I could tell from the front row is was almost full. The ushers made sure that everyone knew that there was to be no picture taking. What a shame, because there were some good opportunities to get some good shots of the guys, but at the same time it allows you more time to just relax and enjoy the show.
The show started right on time with our handsome three Tenors and the Maestro looking fantastic. The Tenors sounded just great and many of the songs were familiar and loved by the audience. I did not make a list of the songs but will try to give you some of them from memory. Karl did a great job with The Old Man, Lift the Wings and The Water Is Wide. Finbar's Beautiful Dreamer and Sweet Sixteen were out of this world and he really had the audience laughing with Little Brigid Flynn.
By far the best performance at this show was Anthony's beautiful Knocknashee. He sat on a stool and with mike in hand gave the audience a moment to remember for a lifetime. The song is beautiful and Anthony was, to put it simply, just fantastic. From now on when I hear this song, all I will have to do is close my eyes and I will see Anthony sitting on stage singing Knocknashee. If I was able to think at this point, I would have pulled out my camera and snapped a picture for all to see, but I was too caught up in the moment.
During one of the songs, the Maestro dropped his music and Karl picked it up for him. Later on, the first violinist dropped his music; Anthony quipped "That we're dropping everything tonight."
I think the spot lights were a little bright for the boys, because part way through the first half Anthony commented that he thought a plane was approaching! This is when the audience really started warming up to the guys.
After the intermission Karl brought out sunglasses for himself and Anthony, and the audience roared! The guys made some comical remarks about David Caruso and his show CSI Miami.
The tempo really picked up during the last half, and everyone was singing and stomping their feet and clapping. Whisky in the Jar and Irish Rover were big hits. The Tenors did a little jig and the audience reacted with applause and laughter
As the show was coming to an end and the boys received a standing ovation and came back for a few more songs. They ended with Danny Boy to yet another standing ovation.
All too soon, the Tenors were saying good night and wishing everyone a safe journey home. It was by far one of the best shows I have seen. The Irish Tenors seem to have a special knack for outdoing themselves over and over again!
Everyone that I spoke to outside commented that they enjoyed the show and they look forward to the Guys returning to Ft. Lauderdale in the near future.
