The stunning overture and the rumbling thunder of the kettle drum set the tone for the dark and stormy tragedy ~

Normanno, Enrico's retainer   ~ Calvin Ellis Lee

Normanno, Enrico's retainer,  instructs his men:  "Search all of you - we'll accomplish what honor demands!  Truth will be revealed as brightly as the lightning illuminates the night."
Enrico enters.  "I'm almost ruined!"  he tells Normanno.  "Only one person can save me - my sister, Lucia - and she refuses!"

Normanno reports that Lucia meets with her lover near her mother's grave.  Normanno informs Enrico that one of his men saw him,  "he is your most hated enemy --EDGARDO!"
"It makes my blood boil," cries Enrico!  "My sister has covered herself in shame.  I would rather see her dead than believe this of her.  The rage I feel is unbearable.  We must lay a trap! I will have my revenge - they should beware, he'll pay with his blood!"
The scene changes as Lucia enters with her hand maid, Alisa.  They are in the gardens near her mother's tomb.  "He's not here yet," sighs Lucia.
Alisa warns, "You're taking a terrible risk with your brother so near!"

Lucia won't be deterred:  "I must warn Edgardo of the danger!"
Lucia begins to tease Alisa.  "That spring there, I cannot look at it ... Remember the Ravenswood who stabbed his mistress there?  She fell in the water where she remains.  I've seen her ghost!"  Smiling slyly, she continues, "One night I was here, it was very dark - a ray of moonlight fell on the fountain.  Suddenly I heard a low moan ... I saw her!  She beckoned me -- and vanished.  Then I saw the water had turned blood red!"  "My God," cries Alisa, "This means you're in danger -- Give up this affair!"  Lucia laughs at Alisa's fear.
Lucia spreads her cape near the fountain and sits upon it.   "I cannot, for he's the light of my life, my comfort and solace.  When he speaks of love, he speaks from his heart."  She reclines and continues, "His vow of love makes me forget my sorrow, with him, I'm in Heaven."

"He is coming," Alisa promises her,  "I will stand guard."
Edgardo enters and they embrace.

"Forgive me for asking to meet you at such an hour -- I leave for France in the morning to join the fight to save Scotland."
"And I must remain here in sorrow,"
sighs Lucia.

"I'll ask for your hand before I go," swears Edgardo.

"NO!  Not now, we must remain in secret," cries Lucia.
"I understand.  He'd refuse me," admits Edgardo.  "He destroyed my father.  What more can he want ... my blood?!  To ruin me completely!?!"
"Calm yourself," pleads Lucia.

"HOW?" shouts Edgardo, " I swore vengeance on your family over my father's grave!  Your love overcame my hatred ... but I've not forgotten my oath of vengeance!"
Lucia pleads, "Please calm yourself.  One thoughtless word gives us away."
"I'm already suffering and fear betrayal.  Forget vengeance, my Love."
They recline at the well and embrace.

"Remember our love is stronger than vows."
"Then swear by God you'll be faithful.
In the eyes of God you're my wife."
"I am yours - our love will set us free - it is stronger than death."

Edgardo reminds her,  "It is time, we must part."

"But my heart goes with you," sighs Lucia.

"And mine remains with you!"
"Write to me, my love," pleads Lucia, "to sustain me when we're apart."

Edgardo swears, "You'll always be in my thoughts."

"The winds will bring you my sighs." Lucia sings, " The voice of the sea will be my weeping.  You'll know by my tears how bitter this parting is.  I live only until we meet again."

Edgardo spreads his cape on the ground and holds out his hand to her.  She sits near him and they embrace and share a passionate kiss; they sing of their love.
He rises and pulls her to her feet for an embrace.
"Remember:  God has joined us!  Farewell ..."  Edgardo runs from the stage.
She puts his cape around his shoulders ...
